The 103rd annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade wrapped up with fireworks on Sunday night.  This 3-hour boat tour of Newport Harbor always draws crowds and has been written up in the New York Times as one of the top 100 holiday events. Parking is pandemonium and if you arrive after 5:00 for the 6:30 start of the parade, good luck.  But for hardy soles, this is worth the trip as well over 100 boats from huge cruisers to dinghies dress up in as many lights as they have gensets for and with surprising civility and safety, make their way around the perimeter of the harbor.  This year's smallest participants were two guys on paddle boards with headlamps.

Many Southern California harbors have parades but the granddaddy of them all is Newport.  It's always hard to photograph and if you're trying to capture the actioin with a point-and-shoot camera after a glass or two of wine, it doesn't help the picture quality.
